The Devil
A hold you partly agreed to – and the terms are worse than they look.

Upright
The Devil is bondage that is partly chosen: addiction, obsession, the relationship or habit or job you hate and keep, the appetite that has quietly become the master. When he appears, something has you – money, substance, desire, fear, a pattern – and its power lies mostly in the belief that you can’t leave.
The card is honest about pleasure: these chains were forged from something that once felt good, and may still. But it marks the moment enjoyment tipped into servitude, choice into compulsion. The Devil can also point to a toxic dynamic between people (control, manipulation, mutual dependence dressed as passion) where each party holds the other’s chain.
When he lands, name your chain honestly. Not the polite version. The real one. Because the card’s dark gift is this: the chain is looser than it feels, and seeing that clearly is the first pull against it. Pick your heaviest chain and study how it’s actually fastened: the habit’s trigger, the relationship’s hook, the fear’s fine print. Understanding the mechanism is the first link broken.
Intense attraction. Check what fuels it. Passion is welcome; possession, jealousy, and dependence dressed as devotion aren’t. Keep the heat and refuse the chains.
Golden handcuffs are in play: money or security binding you to what diminishes you. Notice also any greed quietly driving decisions. Name the trade honestly before you renew it for another year.
Notice what you reach for on autopilot today, and pause once before reaching. One small conscious refusal loosens the whole mechanism.
Reversed
The Devil reversed is the chain lifting, the breaking of a bond that has held you too long. When it appears this way, freedom is in motion: the addiction confronted, the toxic tie cut, the pattern finally seen for what it is and refused. This is one of the most hopeful reversals in the deck, marking the moment awareness turns to action: you’ve noticed the chains are loose, and you’re lifting them.
But the card carries a caution alongside the congratulation: liberation is a process, not an event. The old master calls after escaped servants, and the pull back toward the familiar bondage can be strongest just after leaving it. Reversed, the Devil can also mark a subtler danger: trading one chain for another, or claiming freedom while secretly keeping a link.
Finish the leaving. Honor the progress, stay honest about the pull that remains, and guard the exit you’ve made: change the routines, tell someone who’ll hold you to it. Then fill the vacancy deliberately, with something that feeds you rather than feeds on you.
A toxic pattern is breaking: the jealousy named or the dependence loosening. Keep walking it back, and don’t romanticize the cage now that you’re out of it.
You’re breaking free of a financially draining obligation: the bad contract, the toxic job, the debt spiral. Complete the exit properly, and don’t refinance the old chains with new ones.
The old habit will call today, right on schedule. Let it ring unanswered: every ignored call weakens its claim on you.
