Ansuz is the god’s breath: speech, signal, and wisdom passed from someone who holds it to someone who needs it. Odin hung nine nights on the world tree and gave up an eye to win the runes, which is the price this rune keeps naming. Knowledge costs something, and the voices worth listening to have usually paid it.

When it comes up, pay attention to what is being said and by whom. It often marks the arrival of exactly the counsel, teaching, or piece of news that was missing: a conversation, a mentor, an offer, a truth spoken aloud that cannot be unheard. Ansuz also asks about your own voice, and whether what you mean is what you are actually saying.

This rune favors those who can say the true thing at the right moment, and it treats silence in the wrong place as costly as the wrong words. When it lands, listen before deciding, then speak plainly. The insight you need is close, and it will most likely reach you through another person, so stay open to being taught by someone you had not expected to learn from.

Love

A conversation is waiting to happen, and it matters more than the gestures around it. Say the thing plainly. This rune favors relationships where the truth is spoken rather than implied.

Career & Money

Negotiations, interviews, pitches and contracts all go well under Ansuz: the words land. Seek advice from someone who has done this before, and read anything you are asked to sign properly.

Today

Listen more than you speak today. The useful thing will arrive in someone else’s sentence, so leave enough quiet for it to land.

Merkstave (reversed)

Ansuz reversed is the word gone wrong. It warns of messages that mislead: advice that serves the adviser, words used to work someone, or confident talk with nothing underneath it at all.

It can also mark a failure of hearing rather than speaking. Something important may have been said and missed, or a truth may be sitting in plain view while everyone agrees not to mention it. Sometimes the voice being overridden is your own: the reservation talked down, the question not asked because asking felt rude.

Be careful whose counsel you take and how clearly you are speaking your own. Not every voice deserves belief, and the confident ones deserve it least automatically. Ask the direct question rather than the courteous approximation of it, and say the plain sentence instead of the softened version. Ansuz reversed rarely improves through politeness; it improves through accuracy, even when accuracy is the more awkward of the two.

Love

Something unsaid may be doing more work than you realize: a misunderstanding, or a feeling that never got voiced. Ask what was actually meant rather than acting on what you assumed.

Career & Money

Check the wording before you commit. An agreement, a brief, or a promise may be less solid than it sounded, and the gap will show up later rather than now.

Today

Ask the clarifying question today instead of assuming. One direct sentence will save a week of working from the wrong information.
