Upright

Tiwaz belongs to Tyr, the Norse god of justice and the one who kept his word at a cost he knew in advance. That is the rune: courage, fairness, and the willingness to pay for both. It concerns conduct rather than outcome: what a person does when nobody would blame them for doing less, and when doing less would be easier.

When it comes up, a matter of principle is in play. There may be a conflict to be met honorably, a truth to defend, or a victory available specifically to whoever is prepared to fight fair and accept the price. It favors legal matters, honest dealings, and the disciplined pursuit of something just. The rune poems associate it with the star that keeps faith and never fails those who navigate by it.

Tiwaz also speaks of steadiness under pressure and of leadership that puts the cause above the leader. When it lands, act with integrity even where integrity is expensive. Victory here belongs to the honest and the disciplined, and compromising the principle to win the point tends to lose both.

Love

Fairness matters here considerably more than passion does. Keep your word, do the honorable thing, and expect the same in return. Loyalty is what this rune rewards.

Career & Money

Strong for contracts, disputes, and anything decided on merit rather than influence. Document properly, deal straight, and press a fair claim with confidence. Conduct counts more than cleverness here. A clean record is the strongest position available to you.

Today

Do the right thing today even where nobody would ever notice the alternative. This rune rewards conduct rather than outcome.

Merkstave (reversed)

Tiwaz reversed is the honest fight going wrong. It marks conflict that has turned unfair, a cause pursued without integrity, or a will that has been worn down until it can no longer hold the line.

It can point to a legal or moral matter going against you, sometimes deservedly and sometimes not. It can mark sacrifice made for the wrong thing entirely: real cost paid for something that did not merit it. There may also be energy and confidence draining out mid-contest, which is the hardest version, because it looks like failure of character when it is usually just exhaustion.

Check where the principle got compromised, and whether it was yours or someone else’s. If your conduct has slipped, correct it before the outcome forces the issue. If the cause itself has stopped being just, withdrawing is not defeat. Tiwaz reversed cares more about how you fight than whether you win.

Love

A promise may have gone unhonored, or fairness may have quietly drained out of the arrangement. Address the conduct itself rather than starting with the feelings around it.

Career & Money

A matter may be going against you, or the fight may no longer be worth what it is costing. Check both of those carefully before spending anything further on it.

Today

If something today requires bending your own standard, that is the signal to stop rather than the signal to justify it.
