Berkano

A beginning is already underway – fragile, easy to lose, worth the care.

Upright

Berkano is the birch, the first tree to put out leaves after winter and the one that takes root in ground nothing else will touch. That is the rune: what begins in poor conditions and survives anyway. It concerns the stage before anything is strong: unproven, easily damaged, and far more often killed by accident than by malice.

When it comes up, something is being born or reborn: a project in its first weeks, a relationship taking root, a chapter still tender enough to need protecting. The energy is nurturing rather than forceful. This rune is about tending growth patiently rather than driving it, and about the unglamorous care that lets new things survive their first season.

It can mark literal fertility and family, or the metaphorical kind: an idea, a healing, a start that will flourish if it is sheltered. Berkano promises growth, but the slow living kind that cannot be hurried into bloom. When it lands, protect what is just beginning and give it room. Tend it patiently and let it become what it is going to become.

Love

Something new and still delicate, or an old bond finding fresh growth. Protect it rather than testing it. Gentleness accomplishes considerably more here than intensity would.

Career & Money

A new venture in its early stage. Nurture it steadily rather than scaling it fast, and resist judging it by results that it is not yet old enough to produce.

Today

Give some real care today to the thing you started recently. Early attention is worth far more than late rescue.

Merkstave (reversed)

Berkano reversed is growth that is not happening. A project fails to root, a relationship cannot get past its opening, a new start stalls before it flowers.

It can mark neglect (something tender left untended long enough to wither) or the opposite failure, care that has become control. Growth needs room as much as it needs attention, and this rune is where the difference gets expensive. It can also point to difficulty around home or family, or to a general sense that nothing planted is coming up despite the effort going in.

Look at what was started and then left, or at what is being held so tightly that it cannot breathe. One needs attention and the other needs distance, and they can be told apart by asking what the thing itself would want. Berkano reversed does not say the growth is impossible. It says the conditions are currently wrong.

Love

Something may be being smothered, or something may be being starved. The two look different from inside and identical from outside, so check carefully which one it is.

Career & Money

A venture that is not taking root. Ask whether it lacks attention or lacks room, and be honest about whether the timing for it was ever right. More attention will not fix something that needs room, and room will not fix something that needs attention.

Today

Check on the thing you started and abandoned today. It may need one small act of care, or it may need letting go.
