Upright
Wunjo is joy, but specifically the earned kind: the contentment that arrives when things finally align rather than luck falling out of the sky. It is the feeling of having enough and knowing it, which is considerably rarer than simply having enough. This rune is about noticing the good while you are still inside it.
When it comes up, a difficult stretch is ending and ease is returning. Work pays off, relationships settle into warmth, and there is a sense of being in the right place with the right people. This rune is strongly social. It carries fellowship, shared pleasure, and the particular relief of belonging somewhere after a period of not quite fitting.
Wunjo rarely misleads, but it does ask something. Good stretches are easy to spend bracing for the next problem, and this rune is unimpressed by that habit. When it lands, let yourself have it. Notice what is working, say so out loud, and share it with the people who helped build it: joy holds better when it is not held alone.
Warmth, ease, and the genuine enjoyment of someone’s company. Nothing here needs fixing or improving. Say the appreciative thing out loud rather than assuming it has already been understood.
Recognition, a reward arriving, or work that finally feels worth doing. Accept the credit properly and share it where it is genuinely owed. Good conditions for asking for something, too.
Notice one thing that is genuinely going well today and say so out loud, to yourself or to whoever helped make it happen.
Merkstave (reversed)
Wunjo reversed is harmony that has broken somewhere. It points to disappointment, discord, or a reward that keeps not quite landing: the celebration soured, the fellowship turned to friction, the good thing arriving without the good feeling attached.
It can mark a stretch of being out of step with the people around you, sensing something is off without being able to name it. Sometimes it warns against the opposite problem: cheer that is being performed rather than felt, a smile maintained over something unresolved. The rune is unsentimental about that, because pretending costs more than it saves.
Do not paper over the discord. Find what is actually blocking the ease – a resentment, an imbalance, a thing everyone has agreed not to mention – and deal with that instead of working harder at seeming fine. Wunjo reversed does not ask you to cheer up. It asks you to find out why you cannot.
Friction that may be smaller than it feels, or a resentment that has gone unnamed. Address the actual cause rather than trying harder to be pleasant around it.
Recognition may be going elsewhere, or the work itself may have stopped satisfying. Work out which, because one is a problem with the environment and the other is a problem with the fit.
If today feels flat, do not force cheerfulness. Find the one thing that is actually bothering you and deal with that instead.
