Isa
Ice – stillness, suspension, and the season that cannot be hurried.
- Stillness
- Pause
- Patience
Upright
Isa is ice: a single vertical line, the simplest rune in the set and one of the hardest to sit with. It has no moving parts and offers no advice. What it describes is cold beyond argument: a condition that holds in place regardless of how badly anyone wants it to shift.
When it comes up, movement has stopped. A plan freezes, a relationship suspends, a stretch arrives where nothing you push against gives. It reads as failure, but Isa is not straightforwardly adverse. Ice preserves as much as it halts, and some pauses are protection: the forced stillness that prevents a move you would have regretted, or the quiet in which something finally becomes clear.
This rune asks for patience rather than struggle, which is the harder request. When it lands, stop forcing it. Be still, look inward, and conserve your strength for the thaw rather than spending it on the ice. What is frozen now will move again when the season turns. Your only real task is to wait well, and to notice what the stillness shows you.
A pause rather than an ending. Something has cooled and pushing will not warm it. Give it room and let the situation clarify itself before acting.
Projects stalled, decisions on hold, money sitting static. Do not force a move now. Use the pause to prepare properly so that you are genuinely ready when things start moving again.
Do not push anything today. Let the stuck thing stay stuck and spend the time on something that does not require anyone else’s cooperation.
Merkstave (reversed)
Isa is the same either way up, so it never lands reversed: a draw shows it upright, always. Where it turns difficult is in excess: stillness that sets solid, patience that has quietly become paralysis.
