What you already hold is the asset here – build on it rather than elsewhere.

Upright

Othala is ancestral land: the acres that pass down, the hall you belong to, the ground nobody chose but everybody stands on. It is the rune of what was inherited rather than what was built: family, tradition, property, the assumptions absorbed before anyone was old enough to evaluate them. Some of that is treasure and some of it is weight.

When it comes up, the question turns toward what you have inherited. Family, tradition, property, values, the deep ground underneath the life you are currently building. The rune speaks of legacy in both directions: what was received, and what will be left. It often marks matters of home and family, or a return to your roots for the strength they hold.

Othala also asks you to separate what is genuinely yours from what was merely handed to you. Not every inheritance is a gift and not every tradition still earns its place. When it lands, tend your foundations and know what you actually own. Draw on where you come from, and keep only the parts that still serve the person you are now.

Love

Home, family, and belonging: love that feels like somewhere to return to rather than somewhere to perform. Build on what is already solid rather than starting the whole thing over.

Career & Money

Property, inheritance, or long-term security. Favorable for anything built to last rather than to move quickly. Protect what you have accumulated rather than trading it for speed. Slow accumulation is the whole strategy under this rune.

Today

Tend something that lasts today: the home, the foundation, the long-standing thing that keeps losing out to more urgent ones.

Merkstave (reversed)

Othala reversed is the shadow side of belonging. It points to family conflict, a home that constrains rather than shelters, or an inheritance that turns out to be more obligation than gift.

It can mark being held by the past: clinging to a tradition that stopped working, or maintaining something out of duty long after the reason for it dissolved. Sometimes it marks the loss of belonging that was being relied on. It can also warn against valuing where you come from more than where you are going, which is a comfortable mistake and an expensive one.

Look at what is being kept out of habit rather than choice: the property, the belief, the role, the annual obligation nobody enjoys. Then ask what it would actually cost to put it down. Othala reversed does not ask you to reject your roots. It asks you to stop being owned by the parts of them you never chose.

Love

Family expectations or old patterns may be pressing on the present. Separate what is genuinely yours from what was simply handed to you and never questioned.

Career & Money

Something long-established may have quietly become a constraint. Ask whether you are protecting a real asset or maintaining a habit that stopped paying some time ago. Habits disguise themselves as assets remarkably well.

Today

Question one thing today that you do because it has always been done. Keep it or drop it, but decide it deliberately.
