Nauthiz
Need and constraint – the discipline that scarcity teaches when nothing else will.

Nauthiz is need: the friction of not-enough, and the fire that friction produces. The name is the same root as the need-fire, kindled by rubbing wood together when there was no other way to make flame. Hardship and the means of surviving it in a single rune.
When it comes up, limitation is the condition. Resources are tight, options are few, something wanted is being withheld or delayed. Nauthiz does not pretend this is pleasant, and it does not offer a way around. What it insists on is that there is something inside the constraint worth having: necessity strips away the inessential and shows the difference between what you need and what you merely wanted.
The strength this rune forges is not available in comfortable seasons. When it lands, slow down and meet the resistance honestly rather than trying to bargain with it. Deal with what is actually lacking before reaching for what comes next, and let the hard stretch do its work: what you learn under pressure here tends to outlast the pressure.
Patience is required here, and possibly restraint. Something cannot be rushed. Meet the constraint honestly rather than forcing love past the limits it is currently able to hold.
A tight stretch: limited resources, delayed rewards, a bottleneck that will not simply clear on its own. Prioritize ruthlessly, spend on essentials, and resist any decision made purely to relieve pressure.
Work with what you have today rather than waiting for what you do not. The constraint is the instruction, not the obstacle.
Merkstave (reversed)
Nauthiz is hard upright and harder reversed. Here the need deepens into hardship that grinds rather than teaches, and scarcity starts producing bad decisions instead of clear ones.
It can point to limits that were self-imposed (traps built by earlier choices) or to a refusal to take the lesson the difficulty keeps offering. Sometimes it warns of acting purely out of lack: grabbing at anything that promises relief, accepting the first offer, making a permanent decision to solve a temporary shortage. Desperation is an expensive negotiator.
The way through is not force, and it is not speed. Face what is actually missing rather than the story about what is missing. Deal with the single thing you can genuinely change, resist every panicked move, and let the constraint teach you before it wears you down. Nauthiz reversed rewards patience it has made very difficult to maintain. What is learned under this kind of pressure tends to hold long after the pressure lifts, which is the only compensation the rune offers.
Strain that may be arriving from outside rather than from the feeling itself. Name the real pressure rather than letting it come out sideways as blame or distance.
Pressure may be pushing toward a decision that would not survive daylight. Delay anything permanent, deal with the immediate shortage, and avoid solving a temporary problem forever. A shortage is temporary; a contract signed under one is not.
Do not make a lasting decision today to relieve a temporary discomfort. Handle the immediate thing and leave the rest alone.
